Q: Skills for Success

‘Q-skills’ is a course that is designed to give students a chance to integrate reading, writing, critical thinking and language skills into definitive learning outcomes in the form of routine testing and written essays. Each unit of the book focuses on a specific theme, introducing two readings about a similar topic with a variety of related vocabulary words and comprehension check questions. It then focuses on specific language tasks in both grammatical sentence structure and essay organization.

Finally the unit theme, vocabulary and language focuses are tested at the end of every chapter with a comprehensive quiz and are culminated into a written essay where students use the language they learned in the chapter and apply critical thinking skills to their task. On the fourth and eighth week of the course, the students get a chance to apply their writing skills in a unique way by creating Power Point Presentations. Keeping with the themes from the previous chapters, the students choose a topic to present and have a chance to practice written organization of main ideas, learn internet research skills and gain confidence in public speaking by actually “teaching” the class for a period of time. The desired end result of the course is to have the students be more competent readers and writers of the English language, have enhanced vocabulary and language skills, be more confident public speakers and most importantly be able to independently use their enhanced critical thinking skills in all the aforementioned categories.
